Over time, I have learned that there are four basic truths that drive our ability to trust God.
First, we must realize that we all have faith, which is confirmed for us in Romans 12:3.
![Hand outstretched to the heavens](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/f547e4_bcac464ea7d0402c9041d6a42b9dcfe7~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1470,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/f547e4_bcac464ea7d0402c9041d6a42b9dcfe7~mv2.jpg)

Romans 12:3
. . . God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Also, when we accepted Christ as Savior, He came and indwelled our spirits bringing with Him the God-kind of faith.
We can settle that issue once and for all: we all have faith. But, faith is increased in us through the Word of God.
I often failed to trust God because my confidence that He would work on my behalf was weak as a result of not knowing the promises of God.
Secondly, even though I knew the following Bible verse, I never benefited from its meaning until I put it into practice.
![Woman standing on the beach reading Bible](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/f547e4_1b56dd14feaf4ff5b4be26c23cd1ff85~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1470,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/f547e4_1b56dd14feaf4ff5b4be26c23cd1ff85~mv2.jpg)

Romans 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Quite simply, I had to read my Bible. I fell asleep a lot when I first got into it, but it got a whole lot easier when I refused to give up. Soon, the Holy Spirit came alongside me, and that's when reading and studying my Bible became an amazing journey!
The third truth was a real eye-opener.

Galatians 5:6
For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
By way of explanation, circumcision is a sign of the covenant God made with Abraham in Genesis 17:9-14. Since New Testament Christians are not under Old Testament Law, circumcision is no longer required.
But it is the last six words of this Bible verse that made me reevaluate my faith walk: but faith which worketh by love. Like so many other Bible verses, I'd heard and even sung those words before.
But the challenge was being a doer of this Bible verse. It made me reassess how I treat my husband and children, my family, and my church family. Also, rude people in the grocery store who try to beat you in line when they know you are ahead of them, or people who cut you off on the freeway.
Especially customer service representatives who lack training and leave you on the phone for way too long.
The Lord showed me that I needed to improve my attitude, posture, and thoughts.
So I went to work on it, and in messages I was listening to and books I was reading, this Bible verse jumped out.

Romans 5:5
. . . the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
This verse reveals that the Holy Spirit provides the love we need to love others. Though I often felt justified in giving place to my sometimes less-than-pleasant attitude, I really had no excuse.
Fourth, and just as important as all the others, I had to forgive.

Mark 11:25-26
[25]And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
[26] But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
Forgiving was a really hard one for me because it involved so many negative feelings toward the person with whom I'd taken offense. I could say with my mouth, "I forgive," but the negative feelings remained.
I remember one Sunday after the morning worship service, as people were mingling, I felt that I should go and hug a person I needed to forgive. I resisted but the prompting persisted.
I did NOT want to do it.
I finally made the choice to go and hug this person, and when I did, I felt a break in the negative feelings I'd been harboring.
I realized it was the Holy Spirit who prompted me to hug this person. The Holy Spirit wanted to set me free, and I was so glad I obeyed His leading. This was a wonderful learning experience for me, in more ways than one.
I felt so good when I walked away from that cordial and brief interaction with the person I needed to forgive. I felt so relieved. But the enemy was not going to simply walk away from his desire to keep me in bondage.
The enemy repeatedly reminded me of the offense in an attempt to tighten the grip of unforgiveness. But because I had seen the Holy Spirit in action on my behalf through that one act of obedience to hug the offender, I knew that freedom was a possibility.
Each time the enemy brought those thoughts to my mind, I refused to entertain them choosing instead to meditate on Romans 5:5: "... the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."
If I thought of making a negative comment about the person, I'd say something positive instead. If I were in that person's presence, I'd make it a point to give them a hug.
I had to make the choice to forgive. Each time I chose to act against the promptings of unforgiveness, I found it easier to do so the next time. Today, I can truthfully say that I sincerely love that person and have nothing but good thoughts about them.
I refuse to entertain or speak anything negative about them, therefore, I can hold on to my freedom.
I think it is important to point out, however, that if the offense is the result of mental, physical, or sexual abuse, the same principle applies as it relates to meditating on the Word of God, but being in the presence of that person requires a different approach.
God wants us free, and His Word, which is truth, definitely sets us free, as promised in John 8:32. When it comes, however, to abuse that transcends normal human interaction, sound counsel and safety precautions should be employed, especially regarding our proximity to the offender.
Forgiveness is still necessary and possible. Forgiveness sets us free! And God will help us forgive, even if the offender never asks for forgiveness, and even if the offender is deceased.
The love of God, which is in us, will help us to let it go and never again be tormented by it. God wants us free!
How to Put Bible Verses About Faith to Work
So now, with this foundation of four basic truths, I was ready to begin to build my faith in God.
I knew I already had faith.
I knew that I had to get into the Word of God.
I knew I had to allow the love of God to rule in my life.
I knew I had to forgive.
![Graphic of man laying on his side resting on elbow with a book](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/f547e4_6547f3a8e78244b985c1323ed7d39879~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_848,h_1060,al_c,q_85,enc_auto/f547e4_6547f3a8e78244b985c1323ed7d39879~mv2.jpg)
Before I had these basic truths in place, the enemy could lay on his side, casually flip through his playbook, speak his long list of lies, and defeat me every time.
I'd pray a prayer and the enemy would say, "You're not going to get an answer. Why are you even praying?
"God is still mad at you because of what you did.
"You're not worthy. You'll never be as good as so-and-so."
The enemy would hit me with these and many other negative thoughts.
Strong feelings of doubt would accompany his lies and I'd cave under the pressure.
After losing a few times, prayers of faith turned to begging, pleading, confusion, and crying in despair.
And the enemy was still lying there with his playbook, never even having to turn a page.
Why? Because I didn't have enough of the Word in me, nor was I walking according to the Word I did know. I didn't know who I was in God, and I didn't realize how not walking in love and harboring unforgiveness were tools of the enemy against me.
I didn't understand that all of that was giving place to the devil (Ephesians 4:27).
![Graphic of frustrated man up on knees with a book](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/f547e4_5aad2a19c51d4c01a340ef3741d883ed~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_754,h_943,al_c,q_85,enc_auto/f547e4_5aad2a19c51d4c01a340ef3741d883ed~mv2.jpg)
But when I implemented the four basic truths named above, things began to change. The truth took the place I had once given to the enemy, and his first-page lies could no longer work against me.
He could no longer casually lay on his side but was forced to sit up in frustration as he realized I was renewing my mind in the Word.
Pages 1 and 2, 3 and 4 of his playbook were inadequate to stop the truth of God from ruling in my life—the truth that makes me free!
When the enemy said, "You're not going to get an answer. Why are you even praying?"
I responded . . .

1 John 5:14-15
[14] And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
[15] And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
When the enemy said, "God is still mad at you because of what you did. You're not worthy. You'll never be as good as so-and-so."
I responded . . .

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
I'd remind the enemy that I am God's child and that God has forgiven me.
No matter how he fights against me with lies spoken to the mind or with opposition of any form, I know he's defeated.
What if we make mistakes repeatedly?
Christ's death, burial, and resurrection included repeated mistakes.
When we do our part, God will do His part.
Our Part is to earnestly turn to God, away from the thing that holds us in bondage.
God's Part is to break the bands of wickedness that hold us in bondage. He longs to do just that! It's why He sent Jesus—to rescue us from the grips of the enemy (Luke 4:18)!
There are many other Bible verses that I used against the enemy, such as 1 John 1:9, Romans 8:35-39, Psalm 91:13, Isaiah 41:10, James 4:7, and Psalm 27:1-2. God has given us these scriptures plus so much more ammunition against the devil.
![Graphic of man running away.](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/f547e4_5b1c89c2e6de41c689c11b56a6bbcbb5~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_736,h_919,al_c,q_85,enc_auto/f547e4_5b1c89c2e6de41c689c11b56a6bbcbb5~mv2.jpg)
And when we renew our minds in the Word and use these promises against the enemy, wielding our sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), victory is ours!
An enemy who once casually lay down and made the same plays against me from the first page of his playbook not only has to sit up, but now runs from me in terror (James 4:7 AMPC)!
I have had to face other opposing forces as I continue my Christian walk; it's how we grow in God. But THAT lying devil has been defeated.
Holding on to Faith Through Opposition
I want to share an analogy of what I believe happens when we stand in faith against the enemy. It's like being in a tug-of-war. The rope is our faith. We're pulling on one side of the rope, and doubt is pulling on the other side.
Doubt is trying to steal our faith. Doubt wants us to drop the rope (our faith) or be pulled to its side in defeat.
The spirit of doubt brings with it a strong feeling of what it is—doubt. If we do not know the truth about doubt, we'll think doubt is our state of being. If we receive that lie, fear joins doubt. And if we embrace the fear, then our faith is nullified.
You cannot have faith and fear at the same time.
As doubt pulls against us, he's lying the whole time: "You're not going to get your answer. Nothing is happening. You might as well give up." But we MUST realize and hold on to the truth that the WORD OF GOD CANNOT LIE.
When we resist the devil, he WILL flee !
![Woman with hand out as if saying I Don't Want to Hear It](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/f547e4_fe1babcceafa4e30987521610dd61dd5~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1470,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/f547e4_fe1babcceafa4e30987521610dd61dd5~mv2.jpg)

James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Just know that doubt will continue to speak lies to the mind the whole time it's backing out of the door!
If we do not know Who God is in us and who we are in God, doubt can get the upper hand. But when we renew our minds and fuel our faith with the Word of God, we win every time!
How long do we fight? As long as the devil fights. As long as the devil is saying what he says, we say what God says! Just know that the devil is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).
We don't have to worry about losing the battle because Jesus already won our victory for us. As we stand firmly on the Word of God, the Holy Spirit moves in and pulls us into the victory that Jesus has already made ours!
