Isaiah 26:3 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

All day, every day, thoughts enter and exit our minds—thousands of them. Whether positive, negative, or inquisitive, these thoughts directly affect who we are.

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about how the mind operates in relation to our Christian walk. One key revelation was when I realized that we are in charge of the way we think. I used to believe that if a thought came to mind, it must have been birthed from the seat of who we are.

That thinking, however, is erroneous and holds us in bondage.  One minister explained it well: "Every thought that comes to us is not from us."

The natural mind tends to gravitate towards negative thoughts about ourselves, others, life, and even God.

Sometimes, preconceived notions of what other people might be thinking come to mind.  Dwelling on those thoughts can lead to erroneous conclusions about that person.

There are times when negative thoughts about ourselves come to mind.  Turning those thoughts over and over in our minds gives place to negativity in our lives.

Still, there are times when thoughts of disappointment repeatedly flood the mind, leading to sustained grief, confusion, and depression.  All of this occurs within the realm of the natural mind.

Paul speaks about it in Romans 8:6-7.

Romans 8:6-7

[6] For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

[7] Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Carnal-mindedness is natural thinking.  Throughout scripture, the Holy Spirit warns against natural thinking and instructs us to renew our minds through the Word.

Romans 12:1-2

[1] I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

[2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

John 1:1 reveals that God and His Word are one: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Therefore, renewing our minds through the Word of God allows us to become spiritually minded and think as God thinks.

Before the fall in the Garden, Adam and Eve were only spiritually minded. I often refer to them when I seek to understand God’s intent for humankind.

God never intended for us to be confused, depressed, and entrenched in negativity.

Before the fall in the Garden, there were no marital problems, abuse, ill-will, jealousy, envy, pride, confusion—the list goes on relative to what Adam and Eve did NOT have to deal with.

Adam and Eve dealt with none of these issues until after the fall in the Garden.  The Good News is that God sent Jesus to fix it, and fix it He did!  Jesus took our sins upon Himself, defeated Satan, and provided a means for us to live victorious lives with peace of mind.

Jesus said . . .

Bright sunlight shining through clouds at end of storm

John 16:33

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Jesus warned that we would face difficult times, but in this Bible verse, He’s letting us know that He’s overcome all of it for us, and we can too!

But how do we live victorious lives with peace of mind?  By renewing our minds.

How do we renew our minds?  Through the Word of God.

The Benefits of Dwelling on Bible Verses About the Mind

I opened this post with Isaiah 26:3.  I have used this Bible verse many times and learned it works!

I will admit that I was not successful in my first several attempts to renew my mind through meditating on God's Word. That is largely because I didn't realize how entrenched I was in natural-mindedness.

Nor did I realize how relentless the devil is in his efforts to prevent our renewal of the mind in the Word. However, I learned that it gets easier as we persevere.

Why is it even important to renew our minds? First Corinthians 2:14 explains it best, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Through our natural minds, we cannot live our best lives and enjoy all the promises God provided to us. The enemy knows this and takes full advantage of everyone who doesn't know it.

The good news is that when we turn in God's direction to renew our minds in the Word, the Holy Spirit comes alongside us and guides us through the process!

As I stated, renewing the mind gets easier as we follow the Holy Spirit's lead. I’ll share some of the basic steps the Holy Spirit led me to take to help me realize the benefits of Isaiah 26:3 in my life.

First, let’s recap what we’ve discussed so far:

  1. We get to choose what we think.  The enemy doesn’t control what we think about or how we view any given issue.  Satan and natural-mindedness do not have control of our thoughts, we do.  It should also be noted that God is all-knowing--Satan is not. He does not know our thoughts, but he does know when we are not rejecting his thoughts by the negative effects those thoughts have on our lives.

  2. Every thought that comes to mind is not from us.  We are not defined and do not have to be influenced by every thought that pops into our heads.  We can cast wrong thoughts down (2 Corinthians 10:5)!  We can cast down every thought that exalts itself against what God says!

  3. The only way the enemy gains dominance over our thought life is if we give place to him by receiving his thoughts and suggestions.  Receiving them leads to believing them.

  4. The Holy Spirit left a scriptural road map with instructions on how to live victoriously with peace of mind through renewing our minds in the Word (Isaiah 26:3, Romans 12:2).

  5. The Holy Spirit empowers us to read and follow the map properly.

The enemy will try to mow us down, but our understanding of items 1 – 3 above will get us to items 4 – 5.  We win when we follow items 4 – 5 because the Word of God CANNOT fail (Matthew 24:35, Mark 13:31, Luke 21:33)!

So, choose to meditate on the Word of God. It doesn't come naturally. We have to do it on purpose. We have to choose peace.

How Bible Verses About the Mind Helped Me

Once I made the choice to take charge of my thought life, I found Philippians 4:8 very helpful.

Philippians 4:8

[8] Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

[9] Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

I had no idea how much time I spent NOT thinking about the Word of God until I started trying to keep it at the forefront of my mind. Quite naturally, I thought about daily responsibilities and all kinds of other things.

In an effort to fix this, I committed Philippians 4:8-9, the whole passage, to memory.  Then, when I'd catch my mind drifting away from meditating on the Word, I'd quote the verses to refocus my attention. It is very effective!

Other than Philippians 4:8-9, I'd find passages that fit my specific need and meditate on them, making them my own.  I wanted them to become very real to me.

Since Ephesians 6:17 tells us that one of our weapons against the enemy is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, I wanted to be able to use those specific passages against the enemy.

I learned that it really works!  I’d heard about it from mature saints, but I didn’t know how effective it really was until I tried it myself. And yes!  It works!

Now that I had “Word victory” under my belt, I was not at all willing to return to a life without it.  But the devil was not at all willing to give up his fight against me.

I have learned that no matter how long we’ve been on this Christian journey, on every level attained, the enemy will always try to defeat us.

Keeping the same five principles mentioned earlier at the forefront of our minds guarantees our victory every time.

How is that accomplished? By changing the environment of our minds.

We can paint the walls of our minds with Bible verses specific to our needs.

Bible verses painted on the wall of the room

Move furniture of the Word into our minds by the passage load, and arrange them purposefully.

Stand back and see how Romans 8:37 looks, hanging on the wall of our mind: “. . . we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”

Relax on the Matthew 11:28 sofa chair: "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”

Wall decorated with floral design and Philippians 4:13

Decorate the rooms of our minds with Bible verses that prove to the enemy that we are fully persuaded in our faith. When we are fully persuaded in our faith, the devil is also fully persuaded in our faith.

The enemy knows he has no chance against us in any area where we are fully persuaded in the Word!

Table filled with fruit and vegetables

Sit at the table of Psalm 23:5: "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies . . ." Enjoy God’s love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance, fruit served up just for us.

But we must remember that even with all of this fortification, the enemy will still try to present thoughts that are contrary to the Word of God.  We need only to stand strong recognizing that if a thought is presented that does not lead to peace, we get to cast it down!

Let’s look at 2 Corinthians 10:4-5.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 printed against blue sky

2 Corinthians 10:4-5

[4] (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

[5] Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Over the years, I’ve quoted this verse hundreds of times.  It’s one of my go-to scriptures about the mind because it directly reveals our authority over the enemy’s efforts against us.

The devil creates strongholds in the mind, ways of thinking that he uses to try to hold us captive and prevent us from knowing the truth that sets us free (John 8:32).

He brings imaginations that have nothing to do with Jesus and thought processes that he tries to exalt as more real than the Word of God.

All of it is lies!  All of it!

Through the Word of God, we "get to" pull down every stronghold and cast down every imagination and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.  And we "get to" bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ!

Exercising the Word of God works every time!

How long does it take?

As long as it takes!  As long as the enemy serves up his lies, we serve up what God says in His Word!  Do not give up!

Hebrews 10:23 says:

Hebrews 10:23

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised).

The only way we lose is if we give up the good fight of faith! When we hold fast to our faith, we win every time!
